Congratulations to Kim and Martin for Interesting and Well designed Wehlou Website. I am astonished at the excellence and perfection. You design as a I love : clean, clear, simple, beautiful, easy to read, easy to understand.

As far as I understand you are Belgians, I am interested in Humanities and in the World at Large, particularly Languages, Economy, Geography, Tourism, Friendship, etc ....

I have a phpBB Forum on Humanities and those topics, but I don't post the URL here for fear of Spamming you. And I want to have the simple design of you guys.

But I can not find the phpBB style of yours in phpBB.com ...... Is it that Kim invented or programmed the "Wehlou" style ???

I am located in Colombia, South America and my main activity is to sell Women's Clothes in the USA using the Internet.

As I said before I am strongly interested in your "secrets" and "tricks" for designing this Super Beauty of this Forum.

Is there any possibility of having some clues as to this perfection ??

On the other hand I have to use XSLT with Amazon, this is tough and a nice Rumanian Lady Programmer from Amazon has helped me a lot .... I can use Automatic Datafeeds of Sizes, Colors, Prices, etc .... ( for women's garments )

I want to know more and I will return to your Technical and Human Forum.

Thanks

Thanks for the kind words! I'll take a little bow for the web site style, but all the work done for the forum and some for the site was done by Kim, so he'll have to take the larger bow.

Thanks for answer. Thanks for you time and kindness.

I continue being very interested in the technoloy or style of this Forum. And the programming that Kim has done to obtain these quiet and soothing colors.

I write a lot about the topic of depression and overcoming problems and sadness. And your site has optimistic colors, bright and sunny colors.

Kim's style brings peace, composure, or quietude to troubled souls. This is gold for my newly born phpBB Forum. Because it might concentrante in the future on finding joy and the will to struggle against unfortune.

I want your "phpBB style" ......

Of course, life is a give and take, and if you do something for me, then I have to do something for you. Even in economic or dollar terms if that is the case.

Please Martin, tell Kim about my admiration and interest.

On the other hand, I see that you are competent programmers and engineers and probably have something to do with Universities in Texas. That would be of interest to the visitors of my forum in future times.

Now, I am a beginner in this topic of Forums and phpBB and I bow humbly before you. I am in day zero of Forums.

I am hosted by cheapBW.com in California and the loading of my many commercial sites is very fast, 2 or 3 seconds to come to Colombia, South America.

On the other hand I am very upset with the web hosting of my phpBB Forum by Godaddy. Sometimes ( at random ) the pages take 2, 3, or 4 MINUTES to load.

My Forum tries to be GLOBAL, including poor or backward countries. Delays of this sort are DEATH.

Any information on how to change web hosters for my phpBB Forum would be most welcome. I can not pay a dedicated server for such tiny beginning forum. But USD $20.00 would be fine.

Thanks for any help on these matters.

Vincente,

I'm sure Kim will pop up soon. He normally sees any post that's made through the RSS feed. If he doesn't, I'll email him.

About the hosting: I'm using Cedant (www.cedant.com) since several years, and I'm pretty happy with them. The forum has one problem, though, and that is email from the forum software and outbound. If you "watch" a thread, you may or may not get notified. Posters also get errors sometimes, for that same reason (SMTP server does not react). This is something Cedant seems unwilling or incapable of fixing. Everything else, however, is absolutely great. I pay around $15 a month for all this.

About the theme: I'm sure Kim will do what he can to let you use the theme. I have no problem with it. Having a little note and link at the bottom to his site (like I do) would probably be a nice move. But I'll let Kim decide how and what.

Wow, that is quite a nice compliment! Thank you.

I am afraid I must disappoint you that there is not a grand secret that I can tell you on how I made the theme. Martin already had white and blue in his logo and a good front page. I extended those colors into the forum. I usually have two sides when I make a site, a dark side and a light side. This is the light. Smile

I was planning on keeping the theme a "Wehlou original", that is why I did not submit it to the phpBB community, but I can't think of a reason not to let you make use of it, since Martin doesn't mind. Indeed, I would appreciate it if you kept a tiny link at the bottom as credit to our work.

I also might add that I am currently doing small web designing projects to earn a little extra money. I might be able to modify the Wehlou theme to fit your purpose even more so. Then you would also have an unique theme. Unfortunately it would have to wait until after June since I have a heavy work load for the moment, but the summer should prove free for miscellaneous projects.

Through my own experience I can recommend Cedant as well. I can also recommend CWIhosting. The first is based in California, the second in Texas. Both have very competitive prices and good services.

Again, thanks for the kind words,

Regards,

Oh, forgot to mention. My programming skills aren't really due to any University. I think my basic insight of being able to program is inherited. The knowledge to be able to program, including the language C/C++, is based on books and different people. Martin has played a very large role in guiding me through Windows development with all its different aspects in many projects and companies.

University for me has been a good source of needed background information, but I have yet to learn some skills at University that I can directly apply in the work place. I have more classes coming up, so maybe I will be able to say differently in the future.

Kim, thanks a lot for your answer.

I will be very pleased to have your assistance in "styles" and other ideas for phpBB. I can pay and I can promote you but not with links in every page.

Many years ago I worked for small businesses, programming in Dbase 3 and 4 and later in C++ and a database that was the best at its time called Codebase by Sequiter Software of Canada.

Later I started to sell things on the Net. Specially with Amazon. I abandoned consulting.

I was very successful selling Apparel and even earned a lot of money on 2002 and 2003, but things are turning sour now. And I have been in a slowdown.

However I still have money to pay for services and I have an extremely exaggerated inventory of domain names in English and Spanish. Some of the domain names are incredible and nobody would believe that they are in my posession. ( Unless they check a whois ! )

I have started to lose some of them. And I can not bet all my liquid assets in renewals of domain names.

I plan to work very hard in phpBB for the Whole World including the Third World. Only the best technology and design will be effective and will do.

The future is extremely unknown for me, but I see an opportunity in the connection of Latin America to North America or the rest of the World. And also in designing a website of World Friendship, World Economy, World Languages, etc ...

I am very interested in the "styles". I can pay although I have some troubles with PayPal because they don't accept credit cards of my country, but there has to be a way.

I usually pay with debit cards. They were not accepted some years ago, but now they are becoming generalized. When there is a problem, my family and a friend help me with their credit cards.

I can create a thread inside my Forum to promote you Kim, Martin or the Wehlou. With photos, recommendations, etc .... Or a technical category if necessary.

I will have to invest some money on advertising for my forum or my Amazon Apparel Business. I am also working as columnist on little small town newspapers that also promote my name and business. ( printed on paper ). And Latin America has so many disorganized websites, forums and portals that it offers an opportunity for direct promotion. Later this year or at the end of the year.

What I can not do is to post a link to you in every page. Because I always sell my swimsuits at the bottom of the page. And it would look very crowded and ugly. I use the generic English Language names of several garments as domain names.

I think that the method of promoting friends with threads, photos, conversations, talk, etc .... is much more effective that a simple, cold link. So I can promote Wehlou, Martin or you using tech threads and sending people to you. Offering your services, etc .... It is a forum in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and German. Those I understand, plus the Romance Languages.

You are welcome to my forum that is only beginning. I don't post the Domain Name here because that would be ugly spam.

But perhaps I am always a spammer because my name is not common and it appears in many pages selling female swimsuits, lingerie, bras, etc ...

An uncommon name is always a Good Spam. There are 44 pages for Kim on Google and 33 in Yahoo.

I am usually quite discreet with where I place my name, so that is not really an issue. As I mentioned before, I am fully booked until the end of June, so if you want to have me do a project for you in the summer, we can discuss concrete details then. In the meantime, you are welcome to the theme, if you like.

PostPosted: Sat Mar 19, 2005 9:06 am    Post subject: Thanks for answering and corresponding

Kim :

Thanks a lot for answering my posts and corresponding with me.

I beg your pardon if my posts have been very verbose and somewhat foolish.

I have been very much motivated by your web design and by your content. So I became very enthusiastic for doing things.

I took upon myself the task of trying to modify my Forum Colors and Styles.

And I was very successful but there is a little trick that still bugs me :

I can not produce the horizontal grey line separator that you have between the forum topics. That is the grey horizontal and slightly thick line between these topics :

General
.....the horizontal grey line here .....
Jokes
.....the horizontal grey line here .....
De Oude Belgen

I imagine that I have to replace one of the images included in the directory

/templates/subSilver/images

But which one ???

Thanks a lot.

Hey see my post about Gaudy and Flamboyant Belgians of year 1520. It is in your "Jokes" Topic Area.

Thanks again and forgive.

If I just pass you a zip file with the Wehlou theme, are you familiar enough with the code to dig through and find your answer?
Otherwise I will tell you the exact technique.

I already got it...

theWehlou.css
Code:

/* This is the outline round the main forum tables */
.forumline   { background-color: #FFFFFF; border: 2px #006699 solid; }

CSS allows you to have a border on only select sides of your table.
The code above creates the "line" which is actually just a double border.

PostPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2005 7:57 pm    Post subject: I have been in a Via Crucis of Web Hosting

Dear Kim :

I have been in a passion. But not a passion of love with a pretty girl but a "Via Crucis", "Via Dolorosa", and a "Calvary" .....

I don't know if you are familiar with the Catholic Church or if Flanders is Super Protestant ( after suffering from the Spaniards and Catholic Phillip II )

My crucifixion means that everything has failed with Godaddy in hosting my tiny baby phpBB Forum.

And I have had some trouble with Beachcomber.net from Arizona. But they are beginning to help reacting to my protest in WebHostingTalk.com

During the past 8 years I have squandered and wasted hundreds if not thousands of dollars in Web Hosting. This is a Shark Tank, a vile kingdom of predators worse than the Serenguetti plains of Africa with lions and crocs.

Only Decent and Honest Web Hoster that I have found is CheapBW.com ( of California ), that is speed, excellence and perfection. I has been with them for the last 3 years.

Today I continue my crucifixion. Beachcomber finally installed my phpBB after I could not in many goring hours ( I am a perfect idiot )

Now I have to recover the old database from Godaddy and reinstall it at Beachcomber. I continue my passion.

By the Way : the Preview of my messages to your Wehlou Forum is always extremely slow as seen from Colombia in South America. My Forum has to be Super Fast worlwide. More suffering and pain for me !!

Thanks a lot

PostPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2005 8:11 pm    Post subject: At least it has to work for North America and Colombia

Kim :

I plan to be a specialist in Fashion and the Apparel Industry. Fashion for the Seasons and also production, machinery, processes and distribution.

And the Forum is going to be deviated to that topic ( with a change of domain name )

The idea is to sell Colombian Apparel in the USA. I have been selling American Things to Americans.

So this has to be Speed and Pefection at least in the USA and Colombia.

Since Beachcomb.net is located in the USA then success receiving my Forum in Colombia might mean success for American receptors of the net IP Packages.

I have already copied a lot of your design but I have failed completely in the thick grey horizontal bars and your beautiful light blue separators. But don't worry I have too many problems in my life. I can live without your pretty bars and angelic blue sky.

Thanks friend.
